Glasshouse Mountains - Day trip 17th May

Post by BenJancz »

We had a small but determined crew along for this trip to the brilliant Glasshouse Mountains 4x4 Playground. The weather was perfect, very little wind and we had the sun peaking through the clouds throughout the day. The team on this occasion consisted of myself, Capella_Ben and family and Tim and Mel. As usual we set off from the BP Service centre in Morayfield where obviously I was the last to arrive.

As soon as we left the main road we got started on some of that fancy new technical stuff Dave was talking about. The track lead us to bald rocks where a another crew where having some fun. One guy in a brand new Hilux was having a bit too much fun and after smashing up both under tray tool boxes found himself stuck between "a rock and a hard place" Capella_Ben's words not mine. The hard place being a tree, and he was wedged in there pretty good.
Image
Later in the day Tim thought that bullbar to tree must be the new trend and decided to give it a go. I didnt get a pic of him doing it because it basically happened too fast, but this is how we fixed it.
Image
It ended up a cas of a bit more, a bit more, a bit more, too much..... at least its straight now eh.
A little earlier I tried to follow Tim up a short incline and scratched the side of my rear bumper, broke off a reflector and ripped off the mud flap, Mariana ended up taking the news quite well
Image
After breaking something on a car we toned it down for a little while, creaping around bog holes so we didnt get our cars muddy and avoiding anything rocky. It was getting a bit slow so I thought to myself "Thats it, im going through the nex bog hole I see". And it happened to be this
Image
First we guided Tim around the outside of the puddle as his car has a water issue, we then prepared my car by attatching my snatch strap and winding up the windows. I plowed through without any drama, it looked that easy that Capella_Ben decided he would give it a go too, after which he proved that chivalry is infact not dead.
Image
After lunch we drove around in circles for a while before all succesfully cruising over tower Hill without any hiccups.
Image
We the found ourselves at this Track, Tim drove up first followed by Capella_Ben.
Image
I was not going to drive up because i tend to get hung up on ledges due to a lack of ground clearance, however, Tim assured me that if i drove around this rock and then approached this other rock at exactly the right angle I would get over no worries......she'll be right mate.
Image
We attached my winch to Tims car and I dragged myself out having learned that I am probably the best judge of what my car can and cannot do. We turned our noses up at a few tracks as either being too easy or too hard, tracks like this
Image
We then stumbled across a nice little play area where we spent an hour driving a few short course up and down hills forwards and backwards in some cases. No cheating by driving around the wombat holes like dave did last time.
Image
Although he eventually made it up, Tim struggled on the first section that the Frontera had just been up and down and came out with the comment of the day.....
Image
I have been out on two trips to the Glasshouse Mountains and have enjoyed myself both times. If you haven't been yet I highly reccomend you get out there. There are plenty of challenging sections with chicken tracks around all harder sections. There were some really nice new 4x4's out there on Saturday along with the ratty old 80's, Frontys and Shorty Mavs.
Good job leading a great trip Tim.
NO PANELS WERE DAMAGED DURING THE COURSE OF THE DAY
Short movie to follow soon

Great trip report Ben.

That Hilux was well and truly stuffed. They tried to go around the huge part of the huge ledge, but that direction had a tree in the way. Their idea was to turn before they got to it, but under-steer put that idea out of reach. So as the rear tyres fell off the ledge and it landed on the tow bar it then wedged itself up against the tree. And the car behind didn't have a winch.

Here is another shot of Ben spinning around on his belly.

Image

He would have made it but just slipped sideways at the last minute. Pretty impressive effort though!

To make it more fun (or less boring) for the kids I put the third row seats in and folded the second row seats out of the way. This gave them heaps of leg room in their beloved "back" seats. It does play havoc with my load carrying capacity though. They didn't realise that being behind the rear axle meant they would bounce around a wee bit more. In one track we had a series of rolling bumps, one after the other, and I had great fun bouncing them over those

My baby is all washed and vacuumed now after going through that bog hole. After poking it with a stick it did seem pretty soft and I was sure Ben would come to a sticky end, but I was happily proved wrong as he powered through. There is a video of e going through but I can't show you it as Jane added some less than complementary commentary. Maybe she thought I would splash her with mud???

This one was "too easy" hey!!!

Looks like you guys had a good day. Quick question, a scratched side bumper doesn't count as panel damage? Certainly mud flaps don't, those things are definitely disposable.

Thanks Ben(s) for the trip report. Certainly looked like you have a lot of fun. I recognise many of the locations in the photos.

But I only went slightly around that first wombat hole, i.e. completely missing it by 10cm. I saw that it did to an 80 series.
Did anyone get some photos of that other car caught between a rock and a hard place (tree)?

BTW - very nice photos too. I should have my car back in a couple of days, so will have to give the Glasshouse Mountains about go in the near future.

No I didn't take my camera with me when we were watching them. If I had a chainsaw with me I bet they would have paid an awful lot to get that tree cut down. ;)

I walked down there with my camera especially to get a pic but I cant find it anywhere, I was having a few camera issues during the day, I have a nice 5 minute long movie of my shoes walking along a track, and a few photos of the sky.

We discussed it on the day in great detail and decided that a scratched bumper does not count as panel damage.

I finally have my video ready, i butchered it a bit as i am using new editing software.

:P Nice video .... but there must be something wrong with the audio. It had the high-pitched "squeak" throughout the video.
