Sandy creek 21-23 March 2014

Post by krn »

OK last to arrive so here is my trip report. Am sure AB should be writing it as he is the reason we were last!!!

Another great week-end with the breakaway 4x4club at Sandy Creek campground, situated between Woodford And Kilcoy in a picturesque valley.

So who was there? Mark and Arie, the Parker family, the Jackson family, the junior and senior Catton families, and Allan and I

All of the group arrived at Camp on Friday where we enjoyed a lovely campfire, beautiful bright moon rising ,green grass to camp on and the sound of Sandy Creek trickling in the background....heaven.

Off to an early start on Saturday, all keen and on the track by 08.30 where we proceeded to drive via the "ROAD IMPASSABLE TO ALL VEHICLES" route to Bellthorpe National Park. Spectacular scenery driving along the tops of ridge lines, then down into pockets of rainforest and in between old logged forest.
We completed THE LOOP in reverse to previous trips apparently ,with the 4x4 rating of easy to moderate on most tracks.
Some tracks had not been used recently with others being recently graded, still it was four wheel driving at its best with a few challenges along the way but no damage to vehicles or people.

Flora included native palms, grass trees, eucalypt forests, elk horns, bush orchids and more
Fauna saw deer, kookaburras,King Charles cavalier spaniel, and an unconfirmed double Yowie sighting.

Mark expertly led us for most of the day(except for a short time when he was relegated to tail end Charley for leading us into a completely impassable area)
Lunch was at the "old logging mill"and included the great excitement of THE ROCKET LAUNCHER experience provided by the men and kids-great fun.
Saturday night saw another good fire but rather tired adults after a full day.
After we had the Sunday papers delivered by the camp owners it was decided the men would go off driving and the women and children would remain in camp to relax.
The Sandy Creek tracks proved to be interesting with a few challenges for the group.
So thanks to all for a great week-end and enjoyable company!!!!
PS please add any pics-still can't work out how!!!!!

Thanks for leading this Mark. Great job. Was a very enjoyable trip. My family certainly liked the campsite, and the kids particularly liked the shaded creek.

Here are a few more photos.

The birds in the area were interesting.

The kookaburra's also invited themselves for breakfast Sunday morning.

There were a few obstacles found in the Bellthorpe National park.
Image

The views and tracks were generally very nice.

One of the stranger signs to be found on the tracks. Should we have brought a boat?

The kids enjoyed playing in the creek, climbing over boulders, etc.

The camp fire was nice.

On Sunday, a few people went for a another drive. On one of the tracks, a hidden washout in long grass almost swallowed two Toyotas.
Image

Then a hill that didn't look too bad, but marked "rough and steep" proved to be more difficult then first though. Due to the soft "bull-dust" like parts, it was easy to come off the track. A winch and lockers would be recommended for this track.

Another washout on the trace lead to a second winching effort.

But eventually a tree on the other side of the hill stopped all progress. So it was decided to reverse back up the hill.

Another great weekend out.

I had a great weekend. The weather was perfect, so was the company. Thanks to all, was so pleased we could catch up with everyone after so long. And thanks for organising it Mark and Arie.

Pics are good, thanks Dave. Looks like we missed out on some "fun" on Sunday.

Thanks for the great weekend everyone. Melissa, the kids and myself will be returning to sandy creek hopefully near future.

Got the 80 series home in one piece, minus a speedo sensor that was causing the auto to play up and stall the car under breaking. Easy fix.
