Stanthorpe Foodie Trip 10th and 11th June

Post by GridPack »

Perfect weather for a Stanthorpe foodie trip saw 6 vehicles from our Breakaway Offroad club head up to the Granite Belt for a weekend away. This was a last chance to get together to talk about our preparations for the approaching 3 corner desert trip.
We met for Lunch at Vincenzo’s café at Thulimbah then headed down towards Stanthorpe for a bit of shopping therapy at the Washpool Supply shop. With a range of interests within the group we then broke into smaller groups for the next couple of hours to visit our favourite places for foodie - or other interests. Arie, Mark, Tracey and I headed to the nearby Granite Belt Brewery. A very pleasant spot on the back veranda to try a few beers via their tasting paddles.

At 4:30pm we descended onto the Balancing Heart Winery for their Sunset Dinner. A very pleasant evening with terrific pizzas. great wine, firepits and the music from 2 lovely young sisters “Nine Year Sister”. They are local girls who will be going places in the music industry. All this and a newly opened Whisky bar as well.

David and family headed off after the evening to be back in Brisbane for a range of Sunday commitments, but the rest of us stayed overnight and headed to St Jude’s Cellar Door and Bistro for breakfast on Sunday morning.

After breakfast some of our group went to the Stanthorpe “Market in the Mountains” while some of us headed south to take the long way back via Tenterfield.
After a drive through Tenterfield we set off along the Mt Lindsay Highway and stopped off to see “Thunderbolts Hideaway” and the WW2 tank traps. We also did a side track through the Basket Swamp National Park to a lookout. This park and the adjacent Boonoo Boonoo National Park definitely looks like a great area to explore with future trips.

We stopped into a terrific little spot at Liston “The Liston Tea House” for lunch. The quiches are homemade and delicious.

We did a bit of exploring along the Southern section of White Swamp road from Mt Lindsay Highway - which is a very a pretty and unfenced road taking us back into Queensland near Mt Maroon.

A very relaxing and social weekend.
