You could make a day of getting down there, instead of just tarmacing it all the way. We could go down the Mt Lindsey Highway and then through Toonumbar and the Richmond Range national park to the Bruxner Highway then head west toward Girard National Park. I have driven the through those parks previously and they are a nice drive and you would be able to tow your trailer no problems. Then we could set up around Girard and explore for a couple of days, before deciding whether we just want to head straight home or find another route on the Monday.

Alternatively, Rover park is in the same neck of the woods.

Your Tenterfield touring trip says there is a dead end, but there looks like a nice road that crosses Rocky River a few times. Could try it from the Giraid SF end.

I'm still keen to take the kids for a walk up Bald Rock.

Ben - are you going to take to quick and straight route up the rock, or take the boring and safe route around the back/side of the rock and add hours to the walk.
The straight route would take only 15 minutes to climb the rock. But one slip, and you need to start from the bottom again (because you wanted stop sliding and rolling until you hit the bottom).

Also, take a rope along. There is a ridge near the top that you need to cross from the side/longer track that is ok for adults to walk across. It's flat and easy, but only around 1.5m wide. Beyond that, the slope increases significantly. Kids admitting the view could forget to walk in a straight line.

Bald rock sounds good. How long would be needed to climb it?

As for camping ,I have a great little paid for app called Wikicamps Australia and review of the Crooked Creek campsite are not good - very overgrown and toilet full, written on the 25 Feb. The camp site listed in that article appears to be 2501 Rocky River Road, is on the edge of the river and camping with the cows. Is on a private property, and there may be a small cost. Pictures look great, no facilities so need to be self contained (I have been looking for an excuse to buy a portapotti). But a long drive to get to Bald rock.

Otherwise there is Rover Park, great facilities, even a kids room. $45 per night, and I imagine it will be pretty busy, but have the tracks there and close to National Park, 50 min drive to Bald Rock. Also Emu Creek, $5 per person over the age of 3 per night, $10 per day for driving, along drive to Bald Rock. I am unsure if pets are allowed, there wording is ambiguous.
